APG21 is responsible for the Equipment Engineering in the total field of APG with the exception of Power Elektronik. The department is also responsible for the topic CCD control and analysis.
Characterisation and Comparison of space qualified 14-16 Bit Analogue to Digital Converters for Space Imaging Application
The most critical component in space-born image acquisition in various spectral bands is the analogue to digital converter (ADC) for conversion of the video signals. This is the case for all imagers using standard Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs), Infrared-Detectors (IR) and CMOS-Based detectors. Within high resolution imagers with challenging radiometric resolution requirements, limited light sources and optimised optical paths, the necessary resolution of such ADCs is quite challenging with respect to the harsh space environment with a large temperature variations and cosmic radiation.
The target of this Master Thesis is to evaluate and to characterise possible ADCs available on the market of space qualified components and, in one particular case, a device developed under ESA contract. The characterisation and evaluation shall take place under realistic conditions, with typical input signals expected from image detectors instead of characterisation methods normally performed by ADC manufacturers.
Aufgaben & Fähigkeiten:
Your main tasks will include:
The following list shall propose the targets for the development and characterisation.
It includes the following steps:
- Design of a generic approach to test the ADCs.
- Design of a test setup for up to four different A/D converters.
- Build at least one Breadboard ADC PCBs for one selected device type
- Select and adopt suitable power supplies.
- Select and adopt suitable Clock/Waveform Generators
- Define Waveforms for:
- Standard ADC tests with dynamic input signals
- Infrared Detector similar signals
- CMOS Detector similar signals
- CCD Detector signals with optional correlated double sampling possibility
- Define the tests to be performed to characterize the ADCs with different input types (IR, CMOS, CCD).
- Implementation of the semi automated test & evaluation software in National Instruments LabView environment.
- Testing the selected ADCs
- Documentation of the Tests performed and interpretation of the test results
Stellenanforderungen - Qualifikationen:
We are looking for candidates with the following skills:
- English: Intermediate
- Experience in analogue switching technology
- National Instrument SW LabVIEW
